Back to the ATTO SCSI controller Issue...
I really could use some help from those HARDCORE Mac OS Peeps in the house.
I picked up an ATTO SCSI LVD card from E-Bay for a good price. This card is
the APPLE/OEM ATTO,ExpressPCIProUL2D card. It is a Ultra 2 card that has a
64 bit interface. I am running the card under Mac OS X 10.3.5 and it works
fine. It is bootable and I have it dual boot Mac OS 9 and Mac OS X 10.3
without any problems. I installed a 36 Gig Maxtor Atlas IV drive (Ultra320,
10,000rpm, 8 MB Cache). I have also installed LVD SCSI Cable and LVD
Terminator.
Everything works just fine but...
PERFORMANCE!!! My B&W has an IDE ATA DMA33 controller and a Maxtor FireBall
30 Gig drive (ATA133, 5,400rpm, 512K cache). The IDE drive gets better
benchmark scores then the SCSI drive under Mac OS X. Both drives show an
unimpressive 10 MB/sec maximum transfer rate (sequential read test 1024k)
under Mac OS X. This is understandable for the IDE drive but NOT MY BRAND
NEW ATTO ULTRA SCSI/10,000RPM DRIVE COMBO!!!
The drive is using the AppleSym8xx driver for the SCSI controller according
to the ATTO Config Utility. The card came loaded with firmware version 1.6.4
(latest available).
The kick in the head is...
Mac OS 9.2.2 Benchmark tests show the drive performing at 60 MB/sec and the
IDE drive at 28 MB/sec. Both are totally expected results
