You'll only need an ethernet-crossover-cable.

Set both Macs to ethernet.
My suggestion (understanding iMac has 9.x and G4 has 10.2.x):
On G4 make a new user, share the dropbox. Open this on iMac and put all you
want to transfer from iMac in this dropbox.

No, see above.  If you are more familiar with 9.x then boot G4 in 9.x.
Create a new desktopfolder on G4, share this and open on iMac. Now same as
above.
