<The confusion here is the term G3 I think. 9.1 was the last version of
OS 9 that ran on the older unsupported Mac's including the first of the
G3's, all the clones, upgraded 9500, 9600's etc. To use 9.2 and up on
these machine requires a hack. ( see
http://eshop.macsales.com/OSXCenter/OS9Helper/Framework.cfm?topic=32 ).
Other than that there is no reason to not apply the free upgrade to
9.2.2 if already have 9 on your Mac.>

Okay, and thank you so much for explaining it. Yes, I do have 9.1 on my
Mac (G3 beige DT233) even though for now (long story) I'm back on 8.1 --
but does that site tell you how to determine WHICH of the G3s are the
"first of..." and therefore require the hack? Oh, never mind, I'll just
go there. ;-) I also have the downloads of OS 9 Helper and both of the
free updates (9.2.1 and 9.2.2), I found OS 9 Helper via Google and d/l'ed
the updates from the links in OS 9 Helper. If I can do it with ease and
lack of complications, I'd ultimately like to bring my G3 up to 9.2.2,
but I don't plan to put OS X on my G3 at all if I can avoid it --

1. Too rich for my blood: Apple's not giving it away, and I'd also have
to buy more RAM since what my G3 came with (96 MB) isn't enough to run
it. And frankly, if somehow a lot of money dropped on my head and this
was no longer an issue, I'd just replace my G3 entirely with one of those
nice new G4 iBooks which already comes with OS X and enough RAM to run it
properly. ;-)

2. I'm concerned about some of the issues I've seen in posts on this list
over the months about problems a number of OS X users have had with
printing. I have no recollection of ever seeing OS 9 (any flavor) users
posting with printing problems. The ability I presently have to print out
word-processed documents and PICT files on my antiquated but beautifully
functional Apple Personal LaserWriter 300 is just as important to me as
being able to create these documents and files in the first place, as
well as to be able to email, chat online, or go on the web if I have to
-- and I don't want any trouble out of the computer or the printer. IOW,
"If it ain't broke, don't fix it." Which brings us back to #1 above: if
money fell out of the sky, along with that G4 iBook, I'd find out what
laser printer I could just plug it into and run printouts as easily as I
do with my present setup, and buy one of those too. ;-)

<9.1 or 9.2 in whatever variant will all serve well for Classic. The few
times I ever boot straight into OS 9 I don't notice any issues with
9.2.2 versus 9.2.1 or earlier, but I don't use OS 9 on a regular basis.
Someone who does may be able to comment if there are any day to day
benefits/drawbacks to one flavor of OS9 versus another.>

What Mac are you using? And yes, it WOULD be interesting to hear from OS
9.2.1 and 9.2.2 regular users who can provide knowledgeable comparisons
between the two -- and even compare them with 9.1 also. Anyone out there
care to comment?
