I ran a web server for a couple of years using QuidProQuo on a Performa 6214 running 8.6. No hassles. I used to use VNC to administer it, but the buggy vnc server kept crashing. I switched in a switch box to the monitor, and it would stay up for months without a hassle.

I was never getting huge numbers of hits, but it was also serving our Oracle documentation internally, and it was surprisingly responsive for a Road Apple like the 6214. (It's name was Oscar, because I literally found the machine in the trash...)

There's also MacHTTP which runs on nearly anything. I'd probably run MacHTTP over QPQ simply because it's actually available.

That said, OS X is quite secure, and is remarkably easy to manage and set up. Start the Web server service in the Sharing panel, and the /Library/WebServer/Documents folder is your WWW root folder. IIS on Windows is a heck of a lot more problematic.

Since it's Apache, all the various things you can do with Apache are possible. IIRC, under 10.2 you have to recompile it to enable PHP support, but under 10.3 you only need to redo the apache.conf file. I haven't done this, so I'm not entirely sure...I just use the basic web server functionality.
