When I went around with this issue some time back I was assured that master-slave is the most reliable setting for ata drives and I've found that to be true on my Beige. It's a simple matter of setting jumpers. Currently I have two drives on one bus of a pci board and a drive and a dvd reader on the other bus, set as master and slave. Works just fine.
