After deleting all of the extensions that J.J. McVeigh mentions below (and the CD/DVD prefs file, too), I installed Apple's DVD software 2.7.

the G4 will still not read DVDs regardless of whether the DVD software is running prior to inserting the DVD. btw, the DVD is Apple's OSX install/restore disk (one of two).

I suppose I should have called apple about this a long time ago as this has not worked since I got the machine new. Isn't their free service only 90 days from purchase?

Frustrated in Seattle.

OS 9.2 includes several DVD-related extensions and shared libraries,
including DVD AutoLauncher, DVD Navigation Manager ATI (for Macs with
ATI video cards), DVD Navigation Manager NV (for Macs with Nvidia
video cards), DVD Region manager, DVD Video Interface, and
DVDRuntimeLib. There is also an Apple CD/DVD Driver.

If the DVDs contain MPEG files, you would probably also have to have
Quicktime enabled.

If the DVDs in question were burned using iDVD, you may have another
problem. See
