HI Dale,
The HD they sold me was a Maxtor 40 GB Diamond Max Plus 8

It only worked a couple times after they installed it, but I thought it was something quirky and kept trying to figure it out. It would alternate mounting and not mounting. At 11 months I went back to CompUSA to tell them of the pattern. They were not interested.

When I went to Apple, they confirmed that the HD was fine but not in the G3 AIO. They hooked it up to a powerbooks and all my data was there. Since I could not access it on the G3, they made a "transfer folder" on the powerbook. I moved my important stuff from the 40 GB HD to the folder on the Powerbook. They then copied the "transfer folder" onto the 6 GB HD that worked fine in my G3.

The 6 GB was one they had from "parting out" another G3 AIO. Since my 40 BG was working fine and the 6GB was fine in the G3, we swapped the two drives. They can sell it refurbished. The sys profiler says ATA 1 as the 6GB HD.

The replacement may be smaller than what I had, but if the one I had did not work for me anyway, it did not seem to be a bad deal. And since the gal did not charge me and they got the larger working drive, they stand to make up for what they did not charge me.

Hope I answered your questions.

Danielle

Danielle,

What make and model HD did CompUSA sell you?

What made it incompatible after nearly a year in service?

How did the folks at the Apple Store mount your drive in order to copy data, and what make/model HD did they swap you for?

Hi All,

I think there was another person on this list that had the same problem as me but a different machine. I hope my found answer helps someone.

Well the mystery of the HD that wouldn't mount is no longer a mystery.
When I bought the HD, I had asked which HD would fit in my machine. They told me "All of them". So I picked one and had them (CompUSA) install it.

After a couple times it did not work and I could not figure it out and they would not look at it without charging me; even though it was less than 1 year since purchase.

Anyway, yesterday, we took it to the new Apple store here. They determined that the HD was incompatible with the G3AIO. They set it up so that I could copy needed stuff from the old HD, transfered it to their old HD that they had from part, and installed it in the G3 for $0. I traded them the perfectly good incompatible HD for one they had had from parts. Fair deal. G3 forks great now.

I plan to email CompUSA about all the nonsense that they have given me and the lack of support at the store here.

Danielle
