Subject: B & W Help Please...

You guys were really helpful about my problem getting my old iMac drive
recovered. I tried all of your suggestions regarding the master/slave, hard
drive enclosure, plugging into one of the other drives...etc.
Unfortunately, the drive was just too damaged for regular solutions and I
ended up taking it in to the MCS and paying gobs of money to have it
recovered.

I'm writing about the B & W that I got to replace the iMac. It's a very
clean rev. 2, 12 GB, 400mhz machine. It has consistently failed read the zip
drive with the exception of one time. It came loaded with 9.2 which crashed
and failed to recognize the hard drive. I then loaded 8.6 on it (because I
had that...I'm waiting on a 9.2 install disk), reformatted and set it up
with four partitions. It then failed to recognize the USB ports. At a loss
as to how to work on it with no mouse...I took it to MCS who loaded
9.1...still with my 4 partitions on it. This solved the mouse problem. It
is now exhibiting the same symptoms that it has prior to each previous
crash. Namely, it freezes in such a way that I'm forced to turn it off.
Then Disk First Aid reports a problem on the start-up drive that it cannot
repair. Norton then reports an "unexpected" problem that it cannot scan.
There are problems on all of the partitions.

I'm really at a loss as to what is going on here. Is it software? I have
lots of graphics programs...illustrator, PhotoShop, flash. The first crash
was precipitated by Norton...or so it seemed. The second occurred after
loading the drivers for the hard drive enclosure. The last freeze happened
as I was attempting to get into extension manager to make sure the
extensions for my LaCie CDRW were on....I couldn't get it to show the CDRW
on the desktop.

Sorry if I seem to be babbling incoherently...that seems to be the trend now
with this machine. I really want this computer to work, but I'm stymied as
to why this keeps happening. Obviously, If I have to reload the OS every few
days to a week, this is not the optimum situation.

Best,

Rosie
