Did anyone keep up with the PGP controversy? By that I mean: when it first
came out, the feds made a Very Big Deal over the fact that Joe Sixpack now

now we can't stop them, etc.

Then suddenly they stopped.

They stopped because

I'd be surprised, though, if the NSA had found a way to easily break PGP; it still requires a simple method of factoring very large numbers.

WRT encryption, the intelligence community has a simple two-fold task:

1. Make sure that Friends have algorithms sufficiently strong.
2. Make sure that Foes use algorithms that are sufficiently weak.

"Friends" are those people working on US Gov't classified programs.

"Foes" are everyone else.

The agencies involved are very good at their jobs, and have very big budgets. The algorithms they let you use, you can bet they've characterized and cracked. The algorithms they don't let you use, well, you haven't seen those.

It's too bad. Eventually the frog will end up boiled dinner without ever knowing what killed it.

IPsec is native in IPv6. Flip that bit and *boing* all ip connections are encrypted.

Oh, don't forget to burn the chaff from the paper shredder.
