Clicking noise is likely the fan starting up (?). The whine is likely the
system warming (this does not necessarily mean temperature-wise) up to catch
up to the operating requirements of your system. If you have that much of a
load going on, I�d worry more about one of your HDs failing. If you are
cycling the power that often with all those components involved, the MB is
eventually not going to be up to the task as components (like the zip drive)
which may not necessarily need the power immediately are still designed to
take their share anyway in the off chance that you will someday require it
to boot from. All that power literally exploding across your hardware is
like a ball player always wearing his lucky pants whenever he slides into a
stolen base�eventually they will tear. Your car can�t go from 0-55 in a
matter of seconds but consumer demand has required that computers do it.
Personally I�d rather my system took about 1/2 hour to boot up if it meant a
safer ride for my equipment/data in th long run!! ;-)
