Considered by whom and why? What is rude about it? It is so inconvenient
to read under old messages, unless messages are cropped as above, which
most people don't do...

Please understand I'm not trying to be rude or difficult, just educating
myself on a new issue... I've been doing email lists since 1998...

I was trying to avoid this but...

I only top post when I'm not directly responding to statements or questions in the original post and my "response" is more of a stand alone statement.

When I am responding to specific points in the original post I try to append my responses directly after the OP's statement or query. I take care to put blank lines before and after my response to make it easier to read.

When I ask questions in a post I always try to put each question on a single line to make it easier for others to respond the same way.

And as above I use the quoting feature of the e-mail program I'm using to make it easier to understand the structure of the various messages involved.

Without the quoting highlighted It is difficult or impossible to tell the original message from it's response.

And yes, editing the quoted message is important to. I've seen numerous messages with a bottom posted one line response to a multi-page original message. I usually just delete such messages without even scrolling down. I take the view that if people aren't going to bother put a little effort into making their response (or original message) readable, I won't bother reading it.

Note also the change of subject issue.
