Bruce, what if you run repair permissions from a program other than Disk
Utility. Like Cocktail, for example. Will that refer to the current Apple data
base of the disk you booted from?

I would avoid using Cocktail for that purpose. The stuff in Cocktail to repair permissions was put there *before* Apple introduced the utility, as it was rapidly found to be an undocumented hack to fix problems. It may work it may not; it depends on how it does it. I don't know. If Cocktail and Disk Utility are both just doing GUI wrappers around the same command-line utility, then it's fine.

Also, imo, 'Repairing Permissions' is largely placebo in nature in most cases. there was a time when this sort of thing was a problem, around 10.1.5, the reason Cocktail has that bit in it. People do it religiously, I've never done it, and I don't have problems...both my OS X systems have run for months without a single problem or crash. In fact, if I hadn't tried to upgrade my beige G3 at home to 10.3, it would be years without a problem in it's case, since 10.2 came out, in fact. Every problem I've had with it has been due to a failed 10.3 upgrade with various revs of XPostfacto.

My G4 at work trundles along for weeks at a time...in fact it only gets restarted when system updates force it.

YMMV.
