My ISP doesn't seem to mind that I'm using two Macs, both with their own
modems and independent telephone lines, to dial into their office. No
problem; no network hardware; no additional networking software. 

This is the easiest solution for me because of his/her telephone lines in
the house.

Yes, this has been my experience.

When the two computers need to share with each other, the cross-over
ethernet cable does the trick.
