I can toss in a comment for perspective here. I had a love affair with Apple 9600's for a long time. Now I have three G4's. But I keep a 9600 hooked up to my Microtec scanner, another one hooked up to my Nikon slide scanner, and a third one in reserve. All three of these 9600's have multiple, large, high end SCSI hard drives hooked up to an Adaptec 29160 PCI/SCSI card and are stuffed full of RAM. Their hard drives are full of images that I want to keep archived. Storing archived images on a 9600 is very practical and, since I already own the 9600's , very cost effective. I start these reliable old Macs up when I need them, I enjoy using them, they all have CD burners, and if a zip or floppy drive should show up I can read it.

I do my heavy Photoshop work on the G4's. But it seems to me that there are good reasons to own both the new and the legacy macs, and that it works best to have some of both.
