This solution would work, and since FW is hot-swappable, you
wouldn't be constrained by the problem of needing to use the drive
when the computer it is attached to is shut off; you'd just move
the drive to the other computer. It even works pretty well with the
computers connected via ethernet, depending on what you need the
drive for and what kind of speed you want.
   In other words, there wouldn't be any need to have both computers 
directly
wired to the external drive (which you can't do anyway), since both 
computers
can mount the drive even when it's  connected to only one computer.
