Another consideration with regard to a used PowerMac is that there may
be unexpected issues or things you'll want to replace or upgrade. For
example my Dual-533 that I bought off ebay (actually for a good price)

2. Currently the old drive is still in the machine, but just
disconnected. This is because the screw that holds the mounting plate
down is so shredded that I have not been able to get it out.

I've tried taking locking needle nose pliers to it, but I can't get it
to work. The head of the screw is nearly flush and further there is a
slight indentation around the screw making it even harder to get a grip
on the screw. I finally just gave up and accepted that I'd have only
two mounting spots for drives. If anybody has any suggestions on how I
might get that screw out, I'm all ears.

I feel your pain, Steve. I'm somewhat accustomed to being creative (or taking HUGE risks) in attempts to salvage/upgrade my used Macs, since I'm on a small fixed income and have to work on a "beg, borrow or steal" excuse for a budget.

What I'm thinking is dremel and drill. I'd try dremeling the screw head until it's fragile enough to pop the drive tray up. Then (VERY carefully, of course) drill out the screw with my trusty Black & Decker; I'd use a bit that's one size smaller than the apparent size of the screw on my first attempt. If the first try doesn't free things up I'd try to tap out the screw (with a nail or icepick or such) before moving up to the next drill bit size.

I guess the question is:
How brave (or desperate) are you?
