Epson 1250 Scanner

I have an Epson 1250 scanner and the majority of the time when I want 
to use it the result of selecting it in the choice of scanner dialogue 
box renders a long wait and then either nothing or that multi-coloured 
ball will spin.

I usually leave the scanner unplugged from wall AC and don't have the 
USB plug in there either until I want to use it.  Don't want to wear 
out the internal lamp in the scanner.

Anybody have similar problems?  I'm using 10.3.5.
