You did nothing wrong.  Try resetting the PRAM first.  You could try to boot 
from another harddisk.  Have you?

Reminds me of same problem I used to have when I installed OS X for the first 
time.  Found that the problem was created by the ethernet cable being 
connected.  Somehow the computer gets confused.  Disconnect the cable.  Try 
again.  When all is well connect the cable and it shouldn't happen again.

As a last resort, hit the CUDA switch.  I don't know how to work with b/w 300 
but my beige 333 is probably along the line.

This process is pretty harmless and it can't hurt.
