The tests you saw were Mac only. Compared to the performance of USB 2 on Windows, USB 2 still lags a bit behind Firewire 400, but not by a huge margin, it's certainly not half the speed. So it's still a win for Firewire, but less so when the USB 2 implementation doesn't suck as, unfortunately, it does on the Mac.
