Agreed, there was a bad batch of those Deskstars, especially the 40 gig 
models, a friend of mine had one in it's B&W G3, it died just out of 
warranty.

I recently bought a 250GB/8MB Hitachi HD which looks exactly like that 
Deskstar model. Not strange knowing that Hitachi bought IBM, hopefully 
this drive will last longer.

Those Maxtors are indeed very cheap now, I've had good and bad results 
with this brand, my Diamond Max 9 models are still chucking along in my 
server in a RAID config.
BTW I thought that the warranty was 1 year nowadays?
