Cross-over-cable to printer doesn't sound good to me.
What you need is a "straight" ethernet cable methinx.

One Mac to one printer you'll need a crossover. Connecting to a router/switch and/or a switch and/or a hub you'll need a straight.

The beige g3's are funny about switching appletalk
connections when they don't see something "live" on
their ethernet port. Mine always sneakily switch back
to printer or modem when I forget to switch my hub on
 first. grrrrrrr!

All Macs do so. Clever isn't it??!!?? My DSL-modem and router/switch are always on. So any Mac switched off will "awake in ethernet" after restarting.

All Old World Macs will, those that have a serial port they can use for LocalTalk. The newer models can't do LocalTalk so they just stick with Ethernet.

I always thought the "switch to LocalTalk" was a dumb idea. As if people would have LocalTalk set up still when they are using Ethernet.
