From what I read about various versions of Virtual PC it looks like you can use Virtual PC to run other operating systems too. Adding something like Linux might be an interesting summer project for him.

Net/Free/DragonFly/OpenBSD will run under Virtual PC, last I tried. There should be at least one linux distro that will as well.

OK guys, I am probably not the brightest bulb in the box on this subject. I looked at Yellow Dog, RedHat, Fedora, FreeBSD, and DragonFly. I still don't know which one would be a good place for a young man to get his feet wet, so to speak.

Which one would be a good starting point for a newbie? Maybe one with lots of online FAQs and such.

Oooh, sounds sloooooooow.....

The G3B&W does have a G4/450 upgrade and some other improvements. But, yes it is slow. (installs are painful) Oddly enough, Virtual PC seems considerably faster in OS 9.9 than 10.3.7
