OK guys, I am probably not the brightest bulb in the box on this subject. I looked at Yellow Dog, RedHat, Fedora, FreeBSD, and DragonFly. I still don't know which one would be a good place for a young man to get his feet wet, so to speak.
Which one would be a good starting point for a newbie? Maybe one with lots of online FAQs and such.

The G3B&W does have a G4/450 upgrade and some other improvements. But, yes it is slow. (installs are painful) Oddly enough, Virtual PC seems considerably faster in OS 9.9 than 10.3.7
