I used, and occasionally still do, CorelDraw on PC. 
Basically, these are very capable and, I think, easier to pick up than
Adobe's apps. (And much cheaper.) 

They've certainly got enough features, filters, etc, etc to do anything you
might imagine.
The only caveat is output compatibility. If you're printing to your desktop
printer; no problems. If you're thinking of sending files for professional
output, possible incompatibilities. Check with output houses and see what
they say, though be ready for a lot of Adobe-only prejudice. Later version
of Corel apps seem to produce good PDFs, a publisher I work with uses
CorelDraw 10 to do his book covers, submitting PDF files, and they all work
fine.

There are good support groups, notably a bunch of newsgroups on
cnews.corel.com.

Macromedia Freehand is another underrated, but excellent, drawing/layout
app.
