Have you checked your ram. I had 2 G4s with lots of ram installed, when I upgraded to OS X panther, I had a major install and boot problem. When I ran the ram test with the analysis software that shipped with the computer, it showed a problem with the memory. Sorry, I don�t remember the actual name of the software, but it ships with the computer.
With my computers, one would freeze about half way through the install. So I installed the system on another computer and moved the HD to the problem computer. Then that computer would boot, but with random problems. When I finally replace the ram, it has installed and worked fine. Good luck.
