Is it a built in or add-on (pci card) Firewire port?  If it's on a PCI 
card, it might be a good idea to plug the card into your computer's 
power supply.
15 feet seems fine to me, I really wouldn't be concerned until you're 
over maybe 30 or so, but I'm no expert so I suppose I could be wrong.
