There's a company selling a 24x16x24 CD burner that fit the original iMacs and 
was much faster than the 4X max burners that would connect to the slow USB 
ports:

But since this iMac has a FireWire port you could get a fast external CD or DVD 
burner for less than the internal one, probably.

The one benefit of the internal drive (original or the MCE burner) is that it 
is bootable, I don't know if you can boot off a firewire CD/DVD drive on a 
Harmonied iMac.

The original iMac's internal CD is actually a laptop CD drive, a desktop drive 
would be too big.  I've heard many people say you could probably use just about 
any laptop drive in there, but don't recall seeing anyone actually do it.  
Downsides to using a laptop drive would be that it probably wouldn't have nice 
matching faceplate, and it might not be bootable.
