Okay... I've been a satisfied Mac user for a couple of years now and was starting to think I kind of understood the beasts... till now!
I'm running a B&W with a G4 upgrade, 60 GB drive (OS 9 and OS X partitions) and it's an excellent machine.

Yesterday I saw the 10.3.8 update was out with enhancements for the mail app and I was having problems with mail. So-o I decided to install 3.8! Near the end of the install, it crashed and the B&W rebooted... into a Darwin/BSD command line prompt. After =several= unsuccessful attempts to get back into 10.3, I gave up, booted into 9 and started the long reinstall of OS X, formatting the drive in the process.

Everything went fine till the last 10.3.0 cd... the install crashed and gave me the black screen of frustration. Repeated attempts resulted in the same "You need to restart your computer" message. Tried one last reboot, holding down the 'Option' key and it booted into the familiar desktop I've come to love.
Here's the head-scratcher... System Preferences > About This Mac shows I'm running 10.3.8! Um... How'd I do that? I formatted the OS X partition... wouldn't that have removed all traces of the update.

Confused in California,

Amanda
