Whew...get up to OS X, pronto. Yes, get the ZIF and RAM upgrade; your system should run X just fine. I'm typing this on a beige G3 with a 450 Mhz G3 upgrade running OS X 10.2.8. Nice and responsive.
Firefox on OS X rocks. Fast, stable, and largely compatible with everything but the most die-hard MS-oriented sites. This is what you've missed, if you believe they've 'just became more top heavy'.
There's Safari (comes with OS X, derived from the Konqeror browser) and Camino, a strictly Mac port of the Mozilla code.
Your machine will run Netscape 7 (use their 'older versions' link); but I'd go to Mozilla.org and get their last OS 9 version; I forget what version it is, though, 1.1, 1.2 or something like that. MOzilla's 'older releases page is just a long listing, start at the bottom and scroll up until you see it's OS X only.
On 9.1 lots of people swear by iCab.
