It doesn't matter as much to me what browser I use since I started managing my Bookmarks with URL Manager. I can access or create any bookmark from any browser using this utility. I've always used Eudora for email and Newswatcher for newsgroups BUT I try to steer folks who ask me for browser advice to Netscape simply because it does everything - email, web pages, newsgroups, even HTML. A number of folks have asked me what to do since they recently upgraded to OSX and lost use of Outlook Express for email. They can try to export all of their data to Entourage but I encourage them to make the break from Microsoft.

Do any of the other browsers mentioned here handle email?

Mozilla that we were just talking about does everything that Netscape does, but it doesn't contain all the bloated code of Netscape. As for X, I use Newswatcher, Firefox and Mail. I just made some custom sound files which announce that I have mail in the G-list (or whatever folder it is for), using that Apple script which I mentioned awhile back using a pleasant female voice to announce this for me.
