CD/DVD-ROM on Zip Drive bay in G3 400 B/W
I've been looking all over the web for information on what to do with it. Its empty now, and I certainly dont intend to put a Zip drive or SuperDisk drive or anything along that matter. I did see someone mentioning in the MacWorld forum that someone else had replaced that with a CD/DVD rom drive by modifying the bay (no details and no links shown).
Just looking at it you ned to cut out the inner supporting stuff in the bay that's there to fit to fit the zip, construct a bracket to hold the CD drive, then you'll likely need to leave off the bezel.
You could probably bodge a PC drive cage into there if you've got some sheet metal-fu; the fix seems pretty obvious to me, just a bunch of work; that would replace both the upper CD-rom and lower Zip drive cages.
If you can come across an extra CD-rom bezel from the B&W you could probably fit it in there too, though depending on how the springs attach you may be looking at some more custom plastic work.
But it doesn't look undoable. If I were doing this myself, and cared about looks, I'd shop for another case to 1) experiment on, and 2) snag the second bezel from.
I vaguely remember having seen someone do it to a G4 (same case as the B&W) about the time the MDD came out, under the title 'Have two CD's in your old G4, too!', but cannot find it right now. IIRC it showed two CD-rom bezels, too, so I think it's eminently doable.
