After doing some experimenting, I don't think you even have to put the URL in brackets. I think that Mail does do it automatically.
The trick is it doesn't show up as a blue hyper link until the message has been sent.
Well, that sort of processing always happens in the viewer, not the composer. And you cannot control what the end user sees unless you send HTML email. And then you're requiring him to have an HTML email reader. (I personally HATE HATE HATE HTML email. Yes, my feelings are that strong.)
