Well, you can add me to the list of those who contend that NEC USB chipsets are probably the most compatible with the Beige. After trying USB cards with ALI 5271, VIA VT6202, and Opti chipsets on my Beige G4/466 (OWC), it appears that the Koutech (aka IOGear) 5280N4 with a NEC chipset that I got yesterday from Newegg is the only USB card that works under 10.2.8. All the other cards work fine under 9.2.2 only (at USB 1, since they are all OHCI compliant), none but the Koutech works under 10.2.8 -- even though the ALI 5271 and VIA VT6202 have USB drivers written specifically for Jaguar.
