Disappearing IDE can be resolved by zapping the PRAM ten (10) times. This usually happened after installing OS X beta, even when only booted from the CD w/o really installing. Also heard of this problem w/ OS X 10.1. Haven't heard of this problem ever since. Give it a try...
I've been away from the computers for a few days and finally got around to trying your advice this evening. It didn't go so well. Not only did it not fix the IDE channel, my beige G3 refused to boot any HD for a short time. Was only able to boot from the 9.2 CD. Finally got it booting again into 9.2.2 on my IDE HD, but could not get it to boot from the SCSI into OSX at all for the longest time. Finally booted into 9.2.2 and ran xpostfacto again. Used the option to boot into OSX from there and now I have the machine running 10.3.8 once again. I'm just gonna let it run over night and check to see how it is working in the morning. On a related note, I just won an auction for a G4 450 Mhz CPU/zif on Ebay, so when it arrives I will be using the 400 Mhz processor in this computer in the beige, which should speed it up a bit. It's really not that bad running at 266 Mhz, but every little bit helps!
