Anyway, open the utility, select LaserWriter 8, click icon in PostScript Printer Description (PPD) window, click Create, select 4MP, OK, no problem... click Auto Setup... UH-OH... the AutoSetup button is deactivated!!
Click AppleTalk Printer Selection... get an empty box...
I had just this trouble setting up the LaserWriter Pro 630 (and there IS no other usable driver than LaserWriter 8, so I have no option)... it worked fine.
So how the hang do I set this poxed thing up?
If it's connected via ethernet; and your Appletalk is set to your ethernet port it should work. That's exactly how my 4MP is set.
It would if the Desktop Printer Utility would deign to function. It refuses to allow me to clich auto setup, so I cannot set the printer up.
Make sure Appletalk is turned on on the JetDirect on the HP. If it's not been reset, you may have gotten one with that protocol turned off.
What is Jet Direct? If it's something you get by pushing the 4M Plus' menu button, the button doesn't DO anything. No menu... no printer manual either.
JetDirect is HP's name for their ethernet printer interfaces, they're actually print servers handling a multitude of protocols. It will be set up under the I/O section of the menu structure on the 4MP.
You need to take the printer offline before the menu button works. Press the on-line button once, and the light goes off. Now press the menu button and it will cycle through the various menus. When it gets to I/O Press the Item button to step through the various sub-sections.
Another question...why not simply connect all the systems with ethernet? IIRC the 6116 DOES have an ethernet port, does it not?
It does, but can I connect TWO printers to the same ethernet port on the printer? But the problem remins... the printer cannot be set-up.
An ethernet connected printer can be printed from by ALL the computers on the network.
The printer can be set up in Desktop printers if you have the right PPD file.
I'll send that along separately to you. I don't think the set up printer button works if you have the generic Postscript PPD selected,
If not a localtalk to ethernet bridge will get it on, then you'll be able to share files and print without the flaming hoop jumps.
I also note that the 4MP has no power switch... so the thing runs all the time. Really GOOD design... at least the Apple version had a power switch, even if it was on the BACK of the case! Might have to fit a switch to the 4MP.
The power switch is on the side in the curved bump-out <http://tinyurl.com/6dbsp>, There's a round thing that looks like a power switch, but that's the latch to open the printer.
