As mentioned earlier, I plan on upgrading a friends iMac DV 400 Mhz with bigger HD and OSX. As the iMac can't handle more then about 130 Gb, a 160 Gb drive will suffice. The machine has 320 Mb RAM
I have never installed OSX on an iMac, and could need some help:
1. What about firmware upgrade? How do I do it, booted from OS9?
You need Apple firmware update 4.1.9 for slot loading iMacs. You must boot from a 9.1 - 9.2 system file on a hard disk partition (not a CD) to install.
2. Formatting: is it a good idea to boot with the OSX-install, and format the drive as "journalled"? The OS9 formatting program doesn't handle this new format.
I *think* "journalled" is a term used in OS X formatting that means the same thing as HFS+. The two terms can be used interchangeably. Can anyone else verify this? OS 9 certainly works in HFS+. I have formatted drives HFS+ in OS 9.2 and installed both 9.2 and 10.2, no problems. I have also formatted with an OS X disc and installed both, no problem.
3. Partitioning: I was thinking about three partitions; 2 Gb for OS9, 6 Gb for scratch (PhotoShop, CD/DVD-burning), and the rest for OSX. Isn't it a good idea to have OS9 on a separat volume, for emergency booting in case something fails?
You can boot from OS 9 even if it's on the same partition but in my opinion having it separate is better for organization (keeping track of things) and for maintenance and, as you suggest, emergency troubleshooting if your OS X partition gets borked.
4. Should I install OS9 first and then OSX afterwards? Does it matter which order?
No, does not matter.
We have 10.2.8 / 9.2.2 on a single partition on my wife's iMac DV 450 running just great. That machine previously had frequent problems in OS 9.1 and earlier.
