Doug, that's a great a idea.  I got an email from Hitachi web support
saying to try the exact same thing.  I tried it this morning and now
everything works perfectly well!!  hehehehe

Evidently just a standard reformat doesn't rid the drive of all of its
Windows information and this must have been messing with my system. 
Writing all zeroes to the drive fixed the issue.

Thanks to everyone's suggestions.  It's amazing what can cause machine
problems!
