I finally got my 1 gigabyte stick of ram from OWC today and installed it. My Mini is now working SO much better. No lags, much faster application startup, no hickupy behavior... And this is really going to cut down on hard drive usage, since I won't be using the SWAP file so much.

What were they thinking? Selling a computer that runs OS X with only 256 Megs of ram! And you have to replace the 1 existing memory card to upgrade!
Jeeze!
If they had just made the thing a half inch bigger they would have been able to put in a second memory slot - and still sell it with a base memory of 256 which would be easily user upgraded to 512.
They might even have had room to put in a pair of PS/2 connectors for mouse and keyboard - they ARE trying to lure PCers over from the dark side after all.
Yesterday I had some trouble with the old monitor I've been using (I'm still looking into the KVM switch idea, but now that I've spent all my money on the memory upgrade...), so I tried using another old monitor in it's place. The Mini wouldn't boot. So I tried to boot it into "safe mode" with the keyboard combo - didn't work. NONE of the startup keyboard combos work - presumably because I'm using a PS/2 keyboard and a USB adapter.
Wade, I use a PS/2 keyboard (a Microsoft keyboard at that!) and a Belkin PS2-USB adapter, and the startup key sequences work fine. You do know that the PC Alt key = the Mac option/alt key, and that the Windows key = the Apple key, yes?
Now I'm gonna HAVE to buy a Mac compatible USB keyboard just in case I need to do some kind of system maintenance like boot from the install DVD or zap the PRAM. Plus, the keyboard will need to have a USB port to plug in the mouse, because otherwise I won't have anywhere to plug in other USB devices (I have the mouse plugged into to a little unpowered USB hub) which means I can't eject the CD/DVD by holding down the mouse button.
And don't even get me started on how hard it was to open and close the case! Hello!!! Ever heard of those little things called SCREWS! I've BUILT computers in less time than it took me to open and close the case on this thing!

BTW, I have already (much more politely) informed Apple of my opinion on the Mac Mini through their hardware feedback page at http://www.apple.com/feedback/powermac.html .
Good - that's all you can do.
