Greetings, all.
A recent episode of Discovery Channel's "To catch a thief" (great show!) has reminded me that I need to boost my backup regimen.
What backup solutions do you guys use, both hardware and software? I have in the past investigated Retrospect Express, and many others, but I couldn't find what I wanted so I actually wrote my own software. However, mine leaves a little to be desired - for example, it doesn't make CD- or DVD-sized images, so backups must be done onto a hard disk.
WIth today's hard disk sizes, even DVD backup seems too small. I mean, my home directory is a whopping 30GB, so my home directory alone would require at least 7 DVDs. No good. So I guess the next best thing is a Firewire backup disk. What drives are available for this sort of thing?
I have and love an OWC Mercury Elite 400Mbps Firewire enclosure, but it's big and requires a power brick. I'd rather have something small that I can easily stuff into my safe, but price is still an important consideration here.
At Apple's online store, I see: - 40GB LaCie Mobile for $139 - 80GB LaCie Mobile for $199 - 160GB LaCie p3 for $149 - 250GB LaCie p3 for $199 - 160GB LaCie d2 for $179 - 200GB LaCie d2 for $219 - 250GB LaCie d2 for $249 - 160GB SmartDisk for $179 - 40GB SmartDisk for $159 - 60GB SmartDisk for $199 - 80GB SmartDisk for $299 - 100GB SmartDisk for $329 and there are others.
These prices don't seem to line up by size, so there must be some differences I haven't discovered yet between the Mobile, p3, d2, and the various SmartDisk units.
Thanks for your thoughts.
