You might try setting the drive for "cable select" (CS) mode... don't know
if the B&W/OS supports this, but at this point, it couldn't hurt.

Thank you thank you, everyone who responded to my SOS. You've convinced me
to get an ATA card for this machine that seemed like such a bargain! --
I've
already invested in an internal modem (works fine), a second HD (needs
card
to make work) and a CD burner (doesn't work). As for getting more RAM
(there's only one 256MB stick in there now), I've been outbid repeatedly
on
eBay, and am about to retreat to retail sources.

FWIW, I read of someone putting a hard drive in the zip drive bay, but I
can't recall what problems they might have had in doing so.

There's a piece on Low End Mac describing exactly that, said it worked
fine
(but still I wouldn't dare).

As for the CD burner (doesn't work), drivers for the CRX155E don't seem to
exist, but Apple's driver is *supposed* to be OK. On the other hand some
compatibility reports on xlr8yourmac (that I found yesterday) indicate
that
other people have had the exact same problem, nothing happening when the
button is pushed. Incidentally when the machine is opened manually (old
paperclip trick) and a known-good CD inserted nothing happens then either.
The conclusion seemed to be that the burner was damaged somehow in
transit,
but it seems odd that the "damage" should happen repeatedly to this
particular model. I've already switched the jumpers once, will try another
setting.

Best,
Victoria

Hi Victoria,
I installed a CD player in my Super Mac S900 and the jumpers were set so that
when a disk mounted on the desktop, there were no less than 6 icons for the CD.
After much trial and effort, I got the jumpers to give only one copy of an
inserted CD. I’m guessing that no jumper instructions came with the device.
HTH.
Eric
