I have a G4 AGP Sawtooth with a Dual 500 processor. My question is: What is faster than this. Would a single processor 733 mh be faster and better. Where can I get a comparison list of speeds of different processors for this model
Give us a hint. What are you using your Mac for? What apps do you use mostly? Some apps are MP aware and some are not. Do you have a lot of apps churning in the background or do you only use one app at a time?
What is is you want to speed up? Sometimes more Ram or a better video card will give you more bang for your buck than a processor upgrade.
Let us know, Len
Yes, I guess a little more info is in order. I hope to get a new video card, maybe ATI 9000 or 9200. I run just about every type of program there is. I use PhotoShop and Illustrator quite a bit. I also do a lot of recording and re-recording using Amadeus. I use GoLive 6 for my webwork and InDesign for my layout. I also do a lot of scanning 'cause I have over 100,000 negs to convert to digital.
I guess I am wondering, in general, the speeds of the processors compared to a dual processor. I have 576 mg ram and I am planning on bring that up to 1gig. I hope to do video transfers in the future and I am converting old records (in pristine condition) into CD's.
That should cover everything I do and as I said I use a good variety of programs.
Thanks Ron Nova Scotia
Folks have told me in the past that a single 800MHz processor isn't noticeably faster than a dual 500 for most daily use. I think it depends on your work habits... if you are a mostly single-tasking kind of computer user, go with as fast a single processor as you can get. But if you use several apps simultaneously on a regular basis, stick with a dual machine, even if the clock speed is lower. Maybe if you get one of those new Sawtooth 2GHz G4 7447 cards, a single would be way, way better...
I use a dual 450 at home and a 733 at work, and I don't feel any significant speed difference, especially since I have more RAM in the dual (1 gig and growing) and I upgraded the video (Radeon 8500).
