I'm glad that I found you. May I ask your advice please. I am about to buy my second G3, the first being an iBook Clamshell 366. I could buy a practically new G3 300 /64 ram /6 gig HD, in his original box and with the plastic coating still atatched to it. It was stored in a graphic SHO who bought G3 and new G4 at the time, so it let soit the G3 in the closet. I could have it fro $350 cdn. The owner says it could boost the ram to 256 an squeeze in a 40 gig HD, selling it $400 cdn. I use a 6500/275/96ram/6gig HD for everyday use. I was looking for a G4 466 minimum.
Hi Germain -- Sounds like way too much money: unfortunately the LEM swap list is closed to new subscribers at present (thanks to a fraud epidemic), but check out eBay -- B&Ws were running about $100 (US) plus shipping or even less (mine was just under $100, shipped) in various configurations. *Some* ebay sellers will ship to Canada, surely. Try to get a Rev 2 if at all possible.
I agree that the G3 is very overpriced, and the hard drive and RAM upgrade isn't that great of a deal either. The going rate for Hard drives seems to be about $0.50 USD per gigabyte, if you're willing to use a mail-in-rebate. I often see 120 GB drives for $60 after rebate, and 80 GB drives for $40 after rebate, for instance. And if he's boosting the RAM to 256, he's probably adding another 128, or even two 64s, all of which you'll have to get rid of if you want to max out the RAM.
And the price with the upgrade is a good two thirds of the way to a brand new Mac Mini, which besides being many, many times faster, will have a legit copy of the latest OS and a warranty included.
