According to this Apple document:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=42717
it looks like the "Graphite"" Airport Base Station actually REQUIRES a crossover cable to connect to another machine without the Auto-MDIX Ethernet ports. (Such as a Beige G3), while the Dual Ethernet or Extreme Base Stations have Auto MDIX and will work with either type of cable with any computer.
I'm not sure which model the original poster has, but it sounds like a crossover cable should connect a beige G3 to ANY Airport Base Station, while a straight-through cable will only work with two out of the three with the Beige.

This configuration should definately work. One phrase you used that worries me is you said "cross over" cable. A cross over cable is only used to connect one Mac directly to another Mac. They are not to be used for a network connection. You will need a standard ethernet cable. Once inserted the Macs should be setup to use DHCP and that's pretty much it...

A friend gave me an early Airport for use with my wife's Clamshell. I got that connecting to the internet ok using the version 1.3 Airport software in os 9.2.
Now I want to connect my Beige to the airport via ethernet so we can both be on line at the same time. That hasn't worked so far in either os 9.2 or 10.3.8.
Might have the wrong cables...one doesn't show any connection in the networks page of prefs in os X. The crossover cable shows a connection in X, but I can't get anything to work. There is no evidence of a connection at all in 9.
I can't find docs for this for either 9 or X.
Any suggestions would be great!
