Thanks Muddle Man (I thought I was the muddle man, these last couple of days). Yes, I booted from the install disk and used its Disk Utility to try to repair the busted OS. And sometimes it said it repaired it, and other times it said it could not repair it. Same thing with Disk Warrior.

I noticed that the drive that went down with OS-X is the only drive of the six I'm running that is formatted as "journalled." Pogue says in his book that some repair utilities like Disk Warrior don't work right with journalled disks. That could explain a lot of the weird behavior, as the drive and the OS on it would claim to be fixed, only to soon go nuts again, over and over, until I gave up trying to repair it and just started installing X on other drives.

And I do have X working now on two other drives, one internal one and one external one. And both boot. So I now have only to configure these new OS-X's until they're like the one that broke.

As soon as I remove all the savable stuff off the damaged drive, I'll wipe it clean and reformat and hope it will be all right after that.

Thanks for the help.

Tom

If it's a standard OS X 10.2 Apple install CD it will
have disk utility on it. After booting to the disk
click on the "Installer" menu and you will see "Open
Disk Utility..."

It is the same for 10.2 and 10.3.

Hi Tom,

So is it an OS 10.2 install disk with a 10.3 upgrade
disk?

Ive never used 10.2 so I dont know what utilities
it came with.

If you do end up doing a fresh install I suggest you
create an emergency
boot CD with Disk Utilities on it so this wont
happen again.

Sorry I couldnt be more helpful.

Good luck.
