Then the 2 macs are given the addresses 192.168.2.85 and 192.168.2.51 and the router has 192.168.2.1
subnet mask 255.255.255.0
Now, my question to you is: If I re-assign the addresses to the Macs to the ones that you give me, would that mess up the PC or it would not matter?

If those numbers are accurate and not a mistype, then your IP addresses are not in the same domain. Most people using a network and a router let the DHCP client in the router assign the IP addresses for your network. Those are usually in the range of 192.168.0.x for home networks, where x is set to 1 for the router itself with the other computers on the LAN set to 100-255. This is just the order of things and that way there is no conflict with other machines on the internet itself. Try resetting the numbers to 192.168.0.100 for one of your computers and 192.168.0.101 for the other computer and then they should be able to see each other.
