Staples is selling an HP Scanjet 4600 for $30 this week, at least in our area.
It is a usb 2 scanner with 2400 dpi optical resolution and a very unusual,
wonderful design. You view the scanned object through the glass top of the
scanner. You can remove the scanner from its base and sscan the center of a
huge quilt, for example.

For $30 I couldn't leave it in the store.

It's is very fast, especially when it previews. Fast enough that if you want to
zoom in on a preview, it rescans rather than magnify the earlier low res
preview.

Too bad the default color is way over saturated and shifted. But I was able to
use their advanced tools to get a good color scan. The thing isn't calibrated
and doesn't output an embedded profile, but, hey... $30. I also suspect that
the glass top design needs to be covered with something opaque when accurate
color is needed. Haven't tried it yet.

Ed Hamrick's Vuescan does not support it. Too bad. He says it's too complex to
back engineer and he gets no support from HP.

I anticipated problems on my Beige with a usb 2 peripheral. I use a combo board
with usb 2 but it never works right, as others have found too. No problem with
usb 1 peripherals, nor in os 9 which has no usb drivers, but in X I've had real
problems with usb 2 equipment. I got this scanner to work fine by plugging it
in to my usb 1 hub. So I guess my computer sees it as a usb 1 peripheral. I
wish I'd thought of that before. (os 10.3.8)

It also suggests that the scanner would be really fast when actually running at
usb 2 speeds. The thing seems to take some time moving big pieces of the
scanned file to the computer...might be a lot better with a real 2 connection.

Just a heads up from
Rich
