Now I'm stepping into the proverbial can of worms. I am confused as to the difference between the following items for my Biege (I mention the manufacturer just for clarity, not because I want to know their reputation/quality/service, at least not yet):

Powerlogix's G3/1GHz ZIF (http://eshop.macsales.com/item/PowerLogix/PFZGX10001G/)

Fastmac's G4/450-533 or 500-600 ZIF (http://www.fastmac.com/products/processors/zifs.php)

Is one route better than the other (staying G3 or going G4)? Can I, just by plugging in a ZIF, change my G3 to a G4 and why would I want to do that? Would that effect the software or OS I'm running now?? With the PL going for $230 from OWC amd the FM G4 500-600 going for 2 bills, it's pretty much a dead heat in $.

The 1G G3 will be faster for almost everything . I'd go with that if the costs are equal.

The G4 offers the Altivec co-processor; OS X will make use of it if it's there, as will a number of programs,(Photoshop, iTunes (for ripping), Final Cut express/Pro, iMovie, iDVD), but against a 2X faster G3, I suspect it'll be a marginal improvement if at all.
