Yes and no, and this is the 'secret' weapon OS X has over Windows.
Yes you are the admin user on the machine, but no, that doesn't
mean you can just do anything you want, willy-nilly. While this
make it difficult for users on occasion, this also make it
difficult for viruses and spyware.
In Windows your admin privileges are assumed; in OS X they're
allowed. HUGE difference.
I wondered, that's why I made the statement.
Right-click on 'Rads_Thinkpad' in the Network Browser, it'll tell
you it's in /Network.
Open terminal, type: (hitting enter after each command.)
cd /Network
now type
ls -l
You should see something like:
[SwampThing:~] johnson% cd /Network
[SwampThing:/Network] johnson% ls -l
total 2
lrwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 512 Jun 1 06:27 Library -> /automount/
Library
lrwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 512 Jun 1 06:27 Servers -> /automount/
Servers
These are 'symbolic links', Unix' version of Aliases. Now in my
case Library is also missing, and I got the same error you did.
to remove that alias, type:
sudo rm Library
(or Rads_Thinkpad in your case) You'll be asked to enter your
password, and it'll be deleted.
Now it's gone from the Network window.
Well, not quite. Here's what I got:
Rads-Pismo:~ radcraig$ cd /Network
Rads-Pismo:/Network radcraig$ ls -l
total 4
lrwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 512 Jun 1 00:51 Library -> /automount/
Library
ls: ./Linda: Device not configured
lrwxr-sr-t 1 root wheel 512 Jun 1 08:55 Linda
ls: ./Rads_Thinkpad: Device not configured
lrwxr-sr-t 1 root wheel 512 Jun 1 08:55 Rads_Thinkpad
lrwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 512 Jun 1 00:51 Servers -> /automount/
Servers
Rads-Pismo:/Network radcraig$ sudo rm Rads_Thinkpad
Password:
rm: Rads_Thinkpad: Operation not permitted
Rads-Pismo:/Network radcraig$
What does "Device not configured" mean? Can I edit that file some
what to point it to the new name/ip (configure it)?
Why didn't it let me?
Unless you have a third party Appletalk stack installed on that
ThinkPad like PC MacLan, you need to use smb to connect. use smb://
the.ip.address not afp:// The 'Appletalk' network protocol you can
install out of Windows is useless.
Ahh, now I remember seeing that (smb) before. I was just using the
default protocol that appeared in the address box. I changed it to
smb,b but got a different error: "Sorry, the operation could not be
completed because an unexpected error occurred (Error code: -50)."
Also if you set the workgroup name to be the same as the PC's in /
Applications/Utilities/Directory Access (configure SMB to enter it)
you can browse to the Thinkpads, as well.
Ok, I tried this also. I changed the 'workgroup' on the thinkpad to
something meaningful other than 'workgroup' and rebooted the
thinkpad, then set Directory Access.app to the same. Doing the Go -
smb:// thing, still doesn't work. I also removed AppleTalk from the
thinkpad and unchecked it in Directory Access, also unchecked Active
Directory. Now, when I go to Finder/Network, that "Rads_Thinkpad"
doesn't show up...even though it said I couldn't delete it. It now
has a folder with the same name as the new 'workgroup' I created, as
well as one called 'workgroup', neither of which have anything show
up in them. Strange.
Now what? I think I got closer, just not quite close enough. Thanks
Bruce, once again, you da man...well almost da man. :)
