When I went form Jag to Panther I thought it was very much worth it.
Faster and much more stable. Tiger is worth it from Panther too, but
Spotlight is not what it should be. Fortunately Spotlight's
underpinnings are very good and I'm sure they are going to improve on
it with time. Anyway, the fan problem is odd, as is reduced wireless
reception. Did you do an upgrade install, archive & install or clean
install? My PB's fans do not run more as a result of Tiger.
Ways Spotlight can be improved:
- when an unindexed volume is mounted that is not the main drive and
is not already listed in the "Privacy" list, Spotlight should present
a dialog asking if it should index the volume, rather than doing so
by default. If you answer no it gets added to the Spotlight "Privacy"
list and isn't indexed. The "Privacy" label needs to change - that's
just confusing. Perhaps, "Excluded Disks and Folders:" or some such.
- there should be an immediately and obviously available option to
search on names only, and not klunky as in the Finder currently. It
should be available in the main spotlight search too.
- from the factory, useless meta-data should not be searched. For
example the name/identity of the camera that took a picture should
not be searched (!!!!!), but the keywords set for it in iPhoto
should. It should be possible to include things such as the camera
name if desired, but it definitely should not be searched by default!
I'm sure there's a million other ways it could be improved. I get the
feeling that Apple rushed Spotlight out the door and they plan to
improve upon it over time. Let's hope it doesn't take them long to
include the above type things.

btw, the jump from Jag to Tiger was not worth it for me. My
powerbook fan runs more often, and my wireless reception is clearly
worse. Makes no sense, but it is true. Otherwise, I hardly notice
a difference. Only pro for me, is that now I'm current, so I can
use the newest versions of things.
