Is it feasible th change the first DIMM (not shown as user

If so, does anyone have a link to instructions?

Yes it is, but you have to disassemble a lot of iMac to get to it.
MacAddict had a how-to a few years back; maybe it's on their web
site...
I have an iMac FP and also have a copy of the take-apart manual. The
iMac FP comes apart like a layer cake (or perhaps a bombe). The DIMM
in question is in the bottom layer, just above the user accessible RAM
and Airport card slots. The chip is a standard chip, sitting in a
run-of-the-mill RAM slot. There are two precautions when getting
inside this part of the machine. Quoting from the manual as follows:
"Warning: Whenever the bottom housing is opened for service, you must
do two things: (1) You must clean the original thermal film from the
surface joining the thermal interface layer and reapply thermal paste
to the thermal pipe. (2) You must tighten the four torx screws on the
bottom housing to a minimum of 17 in.-lbs. ...snip... Failure to
follow either of these steps could cause the computer to overhead and
damage internal components."
Warnings aside, it is not complicated. If you would like a copy of the
take-apart send me a note off list. It is a 4.1 MB PDF file.
