My wife and I have beige G3's with rev. B ROM's. I installed a 80GB slave
drive on mine without a hitch but installing an identical drive in the same
fashion in my wife's machine didn't work. Neither Apple System Profiler or
Drive Setup see the drive. I double checked all the jumpers and connections.
Put the drive into your system. If it doesn't show there it's a bad drive,
Not necessarily.
Some of the earlier beiges only allowed two IDE/ATA drives IIRC - one
of which is your CD.
Try temporarily disconnecting the CD and plugging the second drive in
there, with the jumpers in the correct position for Slave, of course
(assuming that your existing HD is set to Master).
If it works like that but not with three drives, then it's quite
possible you have one of that version of beige.
You could always solve the problem by getting an ATA card to put in
one of your PCI slots. It'll probably have faster access too!
Aternatively, it might just be a master/slave problem. Make sure
that you have the jumpers on all three drives in the appropriate
positions.
you can test by putting the known good one into your wife's and
seeing if it shows there.
If it works in yours and not in hers, it might be a bad cable. Check
carefully for cuts and shorts.
